You Had Me at Downton Abbey Theme

Did any of you catch the amazing designs from the Ralph Lauren runway show?  He started out with the Downton Abbey theme song and everyone went crazy!  I just love that his pieces hark back to the English countryside (and what Ralph Lauren is known for)!

Here are a few of my favourites (individual photos from Fashionista.com's coverage):

I am seriously contemplating making the red velvet suit and the grey jacket/suit with fushia accessories! LOVE!

And check out the tweeds, pinstripes, fair isle sweater vests and argyle socks:

Swoon! Love those hats too!!  What do you think of this collection?

  1. Collection, nice - yes. But can I just say, I can already totally see you in red velvet. It's meant to be challenging to sew with, but why let that get in the way of a good look?!

  3. I vote for doing the suit in forest GREEN velvet or a nice warm chocolate, but that is just me. The bottom row of plaids, to me, is a reminder that sometimes, a little bit of plaid goes a very very long way. I think at least half of those items would have been vastly improved by having only one part of it in plaid (such as: plaid slacks with a plain wool or velvet jacket) and so on. The brims on the bowlers are a bit too small IMHO; there are other hat shapes that Lauren could have used to better effect (trilby being one of them). But I love the little suit with the lace collar. Very chic. And now that the finale (how satisfying to give Matthew the opportunity to get into a fight with the villain!) has been shown in the US, we can all go back and look at all the clothing closely instead of trying to follow the (sometimes absolutely nutty) story.

  4. swoon, indeed!  i love the way the tweeds play on all of those great old-fashioned masculine tailoring details--they somehow feel fresh and fun...reminds me of the way lady mary makes fun of sir richard for not wearing the right tweeds for "walking, not hunting."

  5. I actually live in the English countryside - tweeds make you look like you work on the local estate.

  6. Oh the prince of Wales grey check suit! I want want want and it looks like it might be possible to do something similar! The pop of fuscia is divine. And now I really want a bowler hat!
In fact from what I've seen this is by far my favourite show!

  7. Oh, what darling Fair Isle, and socks with clocks. As for that aquamarine shirt with a white collar ... I'm off to fire up the sewing machine.

  9. I love this collection! It's so nice to see mainstream fashion embracing the elegance of the Edwardian era, yet making it wearable for today.  That red velvet pantsuit is stunning!

  11. I especially love those brown tweed pants on the lower left. Definitely something to keep in mind when I start my Fall sewing!

  12. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see it as "Downton Inspired." It reminds me more of the early 20's to even 30's. But they are very nice.

  17. Well, I just have to say that I now feel like a Fanatic Football Fan, after the Superbowl. With Downton Abbey finished, I need to find some late Edwardian inspiration. Yes, some of these pieces do hint of that era. Velvet, always elegant, can be styled so many ways. I think you would look wonderful in the Red Velvet. I adore the black suit with the contrast collar. I cannot see what it is but I find contrasting collars are flattering on nearly everyone. My big favorite is the velvet upper collar (a Chesterfield styling hallmark) on the jacket of the brown tweed pantsuit. (at least I think it is velvet) To incorporate these details in current fashion is my idea of Downton Abbey. Thanks for this.

  21. WOW!  That last photo especially is right up my alley!  Wow... Love the slim trousers... Might have to get into that...

I think you'd look amazing in the red velvet.  Funny, I was watching DA last night and admiring Cora's red velvet house coat/ morning gown...

Those tweeds and argyles remind me of Ralph Lauren is the late 70s/early 80s.  LOVE it!

  25. Lovely.  I like the 40s and 50s best,  but the clothes in Downton Abbey were wonderful.

  26. The velvet suit would be a lot of fun! I like this collection, but it seems it's inspired by country tweed men's clothing. It's really missing the drapy elegance of the Downton women's pieces.

  27. I love these looks. I have made a few suits from a 1940's pattern with a jacket skirt combo. What I like about making and altering a pattern is that it is really easy to make a second one. These images inspire me to get them back out and make a pant version though.
